Hoover Dam is in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the

At the bottom or southern end of Lake Mead at the Nevada-Arizona
border. Located in the Black Canyon on the Colorado River, Hoover
Dam lies about thirty miles southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada.

What are the positive effects of the Hoover Dam reservoir?

The Hoover Dam provides a supply of water for many cities,
including Los Angeles, San Diego and Phoenix. It is used to
generate Hydrolectric Power (HEP) which relases no pollutants.
Obviously, the Dam is used to prevent flooding in the seven states
in which it runs through. It is also used for irrigation.

How many people died during the building of the Hoover Dam?

There were a total of 114 deaths associated with the building of
the Hoover Dam.
The official figure however, is 96. Figures other than the
official figure vary from the official 96 deaths to 112-114.
According to the website of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, figures
higher than 96 are including additional deaths such as deaths prior
to the authorization of the dam's construction, deaths of nearby
workers that may or may not have been directly involved with the
project, deaths of workers who died of causes unrelated to the
project, and deaths of family members of the dam's construction
workers. The Bureau of Reclamation also points out on it's site
that despite myth and rumor to the contrary, there are no bodies
buried within the concrete of Hoover Dam.

Where does the power from the Kinzua Dam go to?

Authorized by the Flood Control Acts of 1936 and 1938, Kinzua
Dam and Allegheny Reservoir is one of 16 flood control projects in
the Pittsburgh District. The project provides complete protection
for Warren, Pa., from Allegheny River flooding, and in conjunction
with other projects in the District substantially reduced flooding
in the Allegheny and upper Ohio River Valleys. The project's flood
control capabilities were dramatically demonstrated during the June
1972 floods resulting from Tropical Storm Agnes when an estimated
$247 million in flood damages were prevented. Since its completion
in 1965, Kinzua has prevented flood damages estimated to be in
excess of $1 billion. The reservoir also provides water to be
released during dry periods. These releases have the effect of
reducing pollution and improving the quality and quantity of water
for domestic, industrial and recreation uses. Flow regulation also
helps to maintain navigable depths for commercial traffic on the
Allegheny and upper Ohio Rivers. Another benefit of the Kinzua
project is hydroelectric power. A power plant is operated by the
First Energy Corporation. Its peak capacity is 400,000 kilowatts
per hour. The Big Bend Visitor Center contains displays which
illustrate the hydroelectric process.

Is it problematic to have water get behind the liner?

I HAVE THIS PROBLEM. THE POOL PRO I SPOKE TO SAID IT IS A
PROBLEM AND IT NEEDS TO BE REMOVED. A GARDEN HOSE ATTACHED TO A
PUMP BEHIND THE LINER IN A CORNER SHOULD DO IT ACCORDING TO HIM. IF
IT IS A PERSISTENT PROBLEM YOU NEED TO DO IT WEEKLY.
Had a vinyl liner pool 21 yrs and always have water behind liner
after a major rain or water the flowers too long. We installed a
PVC pipe in the corner with a cap on the end with pencil size holes
drilled in the cap.Then cut a hole in the steel wall and under the
walk way around the pool and attached a water hose to the end
coming out with a water hose and use a utility pump to pump the
water from behind the liner to a drain pipe running in a ditch away
from the pool. It's a pain..but the water weight in the pool is not
surpose to allow the water behind the liner to rise, but guess
what?... is does. Only thing we can come up with is we have clay
all the way down and have sometype of pooling to the hole. We are
installing French ddrains around the pools sides this summer.Good

Why are smaller dams better than bigger dams?

The answer there is more pressure on smaller dams which creates
MORE electricity.

Sorry but that makes no sense. The electricity generated depends
on rate of flow and head available, not on dam size. In fact the
higher the dam the greater the head (depth hence water-pressure at
the turbine), though this can be increased still further by piping
the water to a power-station situated further down the valley
instead of at the dam foot.
A more useful advantage of a smaller dam is its smaller
environmental effect.

Dams in watercourses
These create aresevoir of water that can be used for
agricultural purposes, to prevent flooding, to regulate water
supplies over the year or to generate Hydroelectric Energy.
Dams in Metal work
Clay dams are placed around areas in broken metal work to hold
fluid metal in the area until it cools. "Not worth a tinker's dam"
is a remnant of this as the dried clay dam was worth nothing after
use.

These rubber sheets are installed by dentitists to stop tooth
bits and such from falling to the back of the patients mouth
